In both LOTR and Roger Zelazny's "Dilvish the Damned" (and possibly others)
both had this concept that VERY powerful wizards could be either alerted or
summoned by saying their name, and therefore people never said the name.
This seemed to be particularly true of evil types. Anyway, short of using
immortality, can anyone think of a spell or some other magical means by
which we could have this same effect in D&D?

Subject: useful magic

I know that it's more fun to have fireballs and invisibility, and haste
spells in a combat-oriented game, but has it ever bothered anyone that
Wizard magic is so geared towards combat ONLY? I mean wouldn't it make
sense that spell casters (esp wizards) would be out making spells to make
life easier, produce things, etc?

If anyone is interested in compiling a "Practical Magic" document involving
practical non-combat magic... email me at abertoll@hotmail.com with any
ideas/spells you have.

What I plan to do is get as many suggestions as possible and we can all vote
on spell level, details, etc. before we put it together.
