First of all, this is my first time submitting to the MML, so I hope I'm doing it correctly. (Btw, some of you may know me as Hugin from the MMB.) I'm a long time follower of the MML but figured it's about time to join in on some of the discussions here as well. Now then, I think that a winter war in Darokin is certainly feasible for the Desert Nomads. With Sind secured and utilized as a supply depot they could strike Akesoli hard. As Ville pointed out, there is little in the way of significant population in this area. Come to think of it, this region could be called the 'Land of Leftovers' in the 'Land of Leftovers'! The winters in Darokin are very mild but the weather around Lake Amsorak is considerably colder according to the gaz. However, and the gaz supports this, the lake does not freeze over completely; stating that many of the springs that feed the lake are hot but even so, from living in Canada I know first hand that a large lake like that is not easily frozen over. I think the main difficulty for the Nomads are the autumn rains making things sluggish but at least the sandy ground (compared to the rest of Darokin) would aid in the drainage. IMO, I'd think the Nomads had better claim Akesoli and western Darokin by the beginning of Eirmont and Akorros by the begining of Kaldmont. If they are able to do this they can fight on the Streel Plains through the winter were it is considerably milder. And of course, having humanoids in the ranks helps. Ville V Lahde wrote: One can see now lake Amsorak forms a "Bulge" in Darokin. There is little or no habitation on the northern and southern edges of the lake, and Akorros is a border town also in a sense. If the nomads took both of the cities, their advance forces wouldn't be smack in the middle of Daro territory, but in a contested area. Actually their land-based supply lines would be shorter and easier now (on ice). Controlling those areas would be possible. Also: if you look at the constitution of Hulean forces in X10, you'll notice that a lot of them are made up by orcs and things. These must come from Hule, but also neighbouring mountainous areas like Black peaks etc. They are a resilient bunch. Especially wolfriders woulf be ideal winter troops... --------------------------------- Find your next car at Yahoo! I remember seeing your posts on the MMB. I also remember that my first thought upon seeing your screen name was "the word 'hugin' is a racial slur against black people in Korean." I swear that I'm not, in any way, making that up. I'm assuming that it meant something completely different to you, but that was my first instinct. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2005 18:23:54 +0200 From: Havard Faanes Subject: Re: Mystara d20: Vitality/Wound Points and Defense I like the idea of Vitality/WP and Defense, but I don't think I would use them in any future campaigns. I actually use the Defense rules for my current Freeport campaign, but I doubt I would use it again in the future. My reasoning is that the current rules just don't bother me enough for it to be worth changing them. D20 Modern also uses normal HP/AC so that would work well for Steam Punk/Modern Blackmoor type scenarios as well. Feel free to use it if you want for your campaign though. I think it is an excellent alternative for those who hate the current HP/AC rules. WOW! I've never heard that before! "Hugin" definately means something different to me; it is the name of one of Odin's two ravens that gather information for him (the other one's name is mugin, but that was taken) and the avatar picture is of Odin's horse which has six legs. I understand about the whole regional variations of terms. When I lived in Newfoundland, we had a name for mosquitoes that didn't mean anything except 'mosquitoes', but after I moved to Ontario I quickly found out that here it is a racial slur against the Japanese! Talk about ambarassed! (I swear I had no idea Thorfin! :D ) Anyway, I didn't intend to hijack this thread. I did however have another thought about the Nomad's invasion; with the winter being a more difficult time in western Darokin, I wonder if the Master would make an attempt to attack Athenos. Or, more likely just blockade and/or seige it to make it more difficult for Darokin to receive reinforcements via sea. As another thought, the Athenos Canal could be a strategic target as well either by controlling it or better yet, by damaging it. This gives some interesting aftermath effects that Darokin would have to deal with. Plus, with it being winter, the Malpheggi Swamp would be at it's greatest water levels from all that autumn rainfall. I wonder if the Master would attempt to divert some of that water-logged swamp into the canal itself. OH, the possible devastation! Flooding in Athenos, eroded canal banks, and shallowing of the canal bed due to all that soil and organic matter from the swamp settling on the bottom (further rising the water levels over the banks). I think Loki would absolutely love to try something like that! John Hofmann wrote: > (Btw, some of you may know me as Hugin from the MMB.) I remember seeing your posts on the MMB.
