Jan 18, 2008 23:02:58 What was actually contained in the black box Master set? I'm looking to acquire this set without having to actually buy a sealed box. I just want to make sure I actually get the key items -- books, maps, etc.

AFAIR, it was only composed of the two booklets.

Jan 19, 2008 23:13:59 Yeah it was just the two books. It may have come with some dice and a crayon but I can not remember. It has a good map of the world inside the DM's book. It will be good for your campaign, as in your other post you stated you were going back to basics.

I too have gone back to basics playing with my son. I am using the BECMI books and not even the rules cyclopedia. I started playing when I was 15 and the 20th anniversary is coming up in may. My son recently turned 15 and we enjoy the simplicity of the basic rules. I still have my AD&D, 2nd, and 3rd edition books but I only use them for ideas.

brought mine 22 years ago. Still got it, still remember going to the shop and bringing it home

What was actually contained in the black box Master set?

Here are some of the specific features of the Master's Set

Character levels 27-36 (in RC)
Weapon Mastery (in RC)
the "Pole-arm fetish" section (parts in the RC) [yeah, around the same era as UA for 1E]
Creatures (all in RC)
Siege Machine (in RC)
Paths to Immortality (modified in RC)
Artifacts (ignored in RC and reworked in WOTI)
Famous Artifacts (mostly from the RW, not included in RC or WOTI)
Mystic option (in RC)
Module Monster Compendium (not in RC - some not included in AC9)
The World Map (revisioned in Gaz/RC)

There might be one or two things I'm forgetting, but the big thing missing in later works is the artifacts.

The Faerie and the Zombie Minotaur did not appear in the RC AFAIK.
