PLEASE NO 3.0 or 3.5 Many of the games that I have DM'ed, I have changed the magical items from say a ring of invisibility to a cloak or hat, a Heartseeker spear to a dagger, boots of striding and springing to a ring etc... I have found that this adds a new element to the my game's. The funny thing about it is a lot of new players say that they haven't had a DM do something like that before, I have a hard time beliving that. I was wondering how many of you change items/ powers around? :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Wyrmbane Date : 04-11-04 04:34 PM I have, and some strange things have been found. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Toron Relg Date : 04-11-04 06:21 PM The various members of my gaming group have done this for years, back to the 1st edition days. Some prime examples are: Weapons (sword, dagger, mace, etc.) that function like a wand. I remember having a character back in 1st edition that had a magic sword that shot 2 magic missiles for 1 charge, when he used the last charge it turned to dust. Lots of "Form changes" like that (Boots of invisibility, amulets of Speed, etc. Then there were variant items: usually when the DM didn't like one power of a item with multiples, he changed it: example: I remember havign a pc get a staff, either of Power or the Magi, but it had most of the higher level spells changed out. It got to a point where they wouldn't go for the wands any more and just left them or sold them. So I came up with thw sword of wonder... etc. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Maerik the Mystic Date : 04-11-04 08:48 PM Originally posted by Stonebeard Well I was infamous for a while with a group of players for handing out wands of wonder with treasure. Wow. All those creative people sitting around and no one thought tweak items or to even use the "Quirks" tables from Dragon Magazine?? Bizarre. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Maerik the Mystic Date : 04-12-04 02:35 AM I know imayb1, it seemed odd to me to, I didn't think it was that big of a deal, I thougth everyone did it to some degree. The first game I played in the DM had mix stuff around, I started playing with just a copy of the player handbook so I didn't know the difference when I aquired some magical items, until later on when I bought the DM's guide and was looking up some of the item's I had on my character. When I couldn't find some of the stuff in the book, I ask the DM he just laughed and said nothing is set in stone and that he mixed up item's ( not all) just so thing's would be interesting, so when I started DMing I did the same thing. The funny thing about it as the years rolled by and I ran game's a lot of players would after getting their item's identified would ask me where was that in the book and they would say that the game's that they played in the past the DM had never did this, and they were not newbies. Go figure?. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : realmaster Date : 04-12-04 02:45 AM It's always fun when the players are checking out a sword and all of a sudden a spell shoots off and puts them on their heels.:smirk: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Morhawke Date : 04-12-04 03:06 AM hmm, many a player in my on going games have found, rings of Eleven kind (like girdles of dwarven kind) or a quill pen of feather fall (instead of ring) just a nice to mix it up a little. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : blintbrokenhaft Date : 04-12-04 07:02 AM I'll be giving out a suit of elven leather soon, and the stuff in the dmg got old 20 years ago. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Thailfi Date : 04-12-04 10:19 AM Well I was infamous for a while with a group of players for handing out wands of wonder with treasure. I have a character that would love playing in this group. He is a 8th level Sprite specialty priest of Erevan Elesere. In combat he almost exclusively uses a wand of wonder. These specialty priests (from Demi-Human Dieties supplement) have the ability to change the results of the random outcome roll by one space either way. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : SamualT Barronsword Date : 04-12-04 11:39 AM Well, I can't say I've never done it, but I rarely have bothered to change the form of a magic item as it is described in the book to something else. Of course there's no reason why a DM couldn't do such a thing, but I've never thought to do it unless there was a good reason, say giving a cat familiar a +2 collar of protection instead of a ring or cloak, since cats don't easily wear either. Not to say you would never find magical things in my game's that were not in the DMG, just that the nonstandard magic items I like to come up with and introduce into a campaign are "new" types of magic items, not DMG items in a different form. That just doesn't really appeal to me as being the worth the time or effort of doing and subsequently tracking, minimal as that may be. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : Thailfi Date : 04-12-04 12:38 PM We change stuff all the time, but we never allow more than two items of protection to work together. Originally one ring would work with a cloak, so we make sure that nobody gets an earring, amulet, and cloak of protection and have them all work together. We have had boots of displacement, scabards of regeneration and other things. When Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II came out we started incorporating items from it, like the mages robes of resistences, etc. The problem is that we don't play like 3e players regarding magic items. If you didn't get it from a dungeon, you were not going to get it unless you tried to trade with an NPC. In the bigger towns like Sigil and Waterdeep we will let vendors have minor items like +1 swords. When Spelljammer came out we introduced the Arcane and we have them equally tight fisted. They will trade items at a 25% profit, but they will rake you over the coals for stuff you are buying with gold. At least 3 times the DMs Guide price. The bottom line is that magic items just are not that prevalent and the ones the players do get are usually from old published materials. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 14] Author : beavis123 Date : 04-12-04 09:55 PM Thread Title : oh yes As much as players loved the simplicity of the game, house rules were developed to change the game for their tastes. Magic items were no different. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : Kyvor Date : 04-13-04 11:12 AM A very simple way to do this... use the DMG and roll twice for treasure. Then combine the two items in some way. So you might get a Rope of Climbing and an Arrow of Direction. Presto, you now have a Rope of Direction. Get a Cloak of Displacement + Potion of Longevity and you get a Cloak of Protection Against Aging Attacks. Or a Potion of Displacement, take your pick. It's quick and easy, and keeps those that have memorized the books from knowing everything. ;-) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:21 AM.
