What if a ranger's alignment changes involuntarily? Are they allowed to continue being a ranger? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Stonebeard Date : 04-27-04 08:20 PM I'm not up on my 2e but this is an exact quote from the 1e PHB. "Any change to non-good alignment immediately strips the ranger of all benefits, adn the character becomes a fighter, with eight-sided hit dice, everafter, and can never regain ranger status." I'm not sure if its the case in 2e but in 1e a ranger got a d8 for hps and got 2d8 at first level to offset the difference. The fighter and paladin would theoretically pass him in highest potential for hps in later levels. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : imayb1 Date : 04-27-04 09:36 PM Hm. Yes, but... if you take a look at the ranger's handbook, there are exceptions. And there is such a thing as a dark ranger... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Hiryu Date : 04-27-04 11:18 PM AD&D is a modular and adaptable game. This is specially true for 2ed AD&D. The best advice I could ever give to either a newbie or an experienced DM, is that each and every rule must be looked as guidelines. None of it is written in stone, nor should it. The sheer ammount of houserules, optional rules suplements like the Player's Option series and all the netbooks out there attest to that. If you feel something doesn't feel right for you, doesn't make sense for the way you see each class and race archetype played or you just don't like it or think you have a better way, then by all means do so. As any old AD&D player and they will most likely tell you that there is nothing worse than a rules lawyer (someone who knows any and all rulebooks they can get by heart and wants everything to be followed by the letter). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Sildatorak Date : 04-28-04 05:27 AM The 2e ranger actually has a code of conduct that isn't as harsh as the paladin's but is stringent. If he ever willfully commits an evil act he permanently becomes a fighter of the same level. If he is ever forced to commit an evil act (domination, lose-lose situations, etc) he doesn't gain any experience points until he has attoned (this is real atonement, not the spell, the dm makes up a quest where the ranger seeks revenge, rights the wrongs, etc.) Since this is an involuntary alignment change you're talking about, I'd say that he is probably going down the road to #2. As soon as he commits an evil act that he wouldn't have done if he weren't under this involuntary influence, then his xp is frozen until the curse or whatever that changed his alignment is lifted and he attones for his misdeeds that were beyond his control. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Falstaff the Fighter Date : 04-28-04 12:14 PM Sildatorak is right. The ranger of 2e had to be good. As for an evil ranger, i think there was one, but it is not in the CRHB. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Curious about Dark Sun Date : 04-28-04 04:47 PM Newb Question #2: I noticed on svgames that there is a Complete Barbarian's Handbook for Second Edition. I have the PHB and DMG from the revised printing of Second Edition, which, as far as I know, do not contain a barbarian class. I thought that only 3.x and 1e (well, Unearthed Arcana) had barbarian as a core class. Does the Complete Barbarian's handbook have all the stats for Barbarian PCs, or were they included in the first printing of the 2e PHB and DMG? Thanks. (Sorry if it's annoying to have multiple questions in one thread. I thought it would be better than me swamping the board with all the questions I'm likely to have.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Falstaff the Fighter Date : 04-28-04 07:23 PM Everything for 2e barbarians is basically in that book. There was never a "core" barbarian class in the 2e PHB. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Hiryu Date : 04-28-04 11:47 PM Actually, Barbarians, Gladiators, Assassins, Ninjas and what-not have been around since 1ed. The Barbarian's HB and all other books outside of the DMG, PHB and MM are considered optional material, so no, they are not in the Player's Handbook. In 2ed, barbarians are an optional class. As for the book itself, it includes everything you need to know to play Barbarian and Shaman characters in 2ed. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Sildatorak Date : 04-29-04 03:18 AM Yeah, the barb's handbook isn't about a barbarian core class, but it has rules about different weapon materials (bone and such), surviving in harsh environments, and kits that are appropriate to non-civilized "barbarians." So you would take a fighter and stick the barbarian kit on him and presto! a barbarian. I know there are both fighter and priest kits in there, but I'm not sure about rogue or wizard kits. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:20 AM.
