Hello my brothers and sisters! I have returned to my home, my roots. I have returned to the past I left behind, never to return to again, save for a fond remembrance or flash of nostalgia. I have thrown off the heavy cloak of 3.0/3.5 and clothed myself in the light, liberating tunic of OD&D. In other words I have decided to take my group back into glory days of OD&D. I discovered recently that only half of my group has played OD&D. The names Karameikos, Glantri, Thar and Alfhiem mean nothing to them. I was shocked and, needless to say, felt a little old. Of our group of eight people, seven of us have a combined 121 years of gaming xp with an average of 17.1 years each (the eighth has 4+ years under their belt and really only started D&D with 3.0). I felt it was time for the group to learn about, experience and remember the roots of the game we love so much. My problem is simple, much of my OD&D products I purchased when I was young and over the years they have become un-useable. Of my OD&D stuff I have been able to salvage two basic sets, one expert set, my rules cyclopedia, GAZ 2 Emirates of Ylaruam, GAZ 10 Orcs of Thar (sadly I lost the Orc Wars counters long ago), GAZ 14 The Atruaghin Clans, Dawn of the Emperors Box Set , and Hollow World box set. I never did have a complete set of gazetteers but I used to have GAZ 1 (Karameikos) and GAZ 3 (Glantri) both lost and GAZ 5 (Alfhiem) which was stolen. I plan to run a campaign from 1st to 36th level and I am left to wonder if I have enough material to do so. I have been able to get GAZ 4 Kingdom of Ierendi off of ebay but have been consistently out bid on almost every other GAZ. Do I have enough? Should I try to find more Gazetteers? Is there some place other then ebay or out-of-print sites like NobleKnight games where I can find them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : rogueattorney Date : 05-25-04 03:54 PM I would say that you probably have plenty. You've got everything you need for a campaign on the Ylaruam/Thyatis border. Each country could be secretly probing the defenses of the other, while humanoids take advantage of any weaknesses... Fun! B4 The Lost City, would be a perfect adventure module to start out on. Of course, playing a little will make you want to fill out your collection... You can (legally) purchase .pdf's of most OD&D products at SVGames and RPGnow websites for less than $5. The quality can be spotty (or worse), but they can't be beat for the price. The best place for hard copies is ebay. Strangely, the B/X D&D products from about '79-'84 are cheaper and easier to find that later stuff (this would include the various versions of the Basic and Expert sets and such classic adventures as Keep on the Borderland, the Lost City, Isle of Dread, Castle Amber, etc.). The OD&D stuff from about '85 and later is a bit more expensive and rare (they had a significantly smaller print run) but not so much that you can't find affordable deals out there. The Gazetteers, especially, can cost you $25-$30 a pop. You can try online cites like Noble Knight to buy them, but you WILL be paying more than on ebay. Anyway... I've filled out my Gaz collection by getting the .pdf's, while I tend to go for the hardcopies of adventures. You can usually get decent copies of the B/X modules from e-bay for less than $10. I think you will be alright with what you have, but then again I am the kind of guy that could make do with just the Rules Cyclopedia if I wanted to run a game from 1st to 36th level. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : vader42xx Date : 05-25-04 05:32 PM Well met and welcome back! :) And I'd say the RC is plenty for what you want, but if you feel you need more than what you have I'd check out www.rpgnow.com for sure. I've purchased quite a bit there and the copies are generally pretty good. Happy gaming! :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Numenorean Date : 05-30-04 02:36 PM Thread Title : Hail! eBay and online gamer stores are probably going to be your best friend for this endeavor. Good luck and welcome to the classic versions of D&D. The new stuff is garbage, it doesn't take most of us old schoolers long to realize it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : WizO_Catoblepas Date : 05-30-04 05:59 PM I've just got a couple of items: 1) Let's not turn this into an edition bashing thread. (this going out to everyone, not in response to any one guest in particular) 2) One place that I have experienced success in getting old material is from my local gaming store. They have an old edition rack where people go and sell to their store their old gaming material. There's times where I could have gotten the material from there for a cheaper price than what I eventually got them for on an online auction place. Just an idea. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : vader42xx Date : 05-31-04 02:22 AM And a good idea at that. Most local hobby shops have such a section and they just love to see those looking to empty such shelves. Might even give you a discount if you buy enough of it at once. ;) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Rian Lightblade Date : 06-01-04 01:22 PM Originally posted by WizO_Catoblepas I've just got a couple of items: 1) Let's not turn this into an edition bashing thread. I'm certinaly not saying that I feel 3.0+ is garbage. In fact I still have another group that I am running a 3.5 FR/RL/DS/SJ campaign for, with on plans to stop. But my main group is the one with only half of us with OD&D xp. 2) Thanks but I've been there & done that, at most of the major game stores in LA and Orange County. I even called up my old FLGS back home in Hawaii and was denied. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Numenorean Date : 06-01-04 01:29 PM Don't worry Rian. I was the one who mentioned it was garbage ;) I haven't been overly impressed with version 3E or 3.5. I play it, played it for the last 2 years, but I'm making plans to go back to 1st edition at some point in the future. I've been gaming since 81' and I'm old school at heart. Anways welcome back. I think 1E and 2E always did a better job at capturing the feel of what D&D has always been. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Rian Lightblade Date : 06-01-04 01:58 PM Originally posted by Numenorean Anways welcome back. I think 1E and 2E always did a better job at capturing the feel of what D&D has always been. I agree, for me OD&D & 1E are still the versions of think when ever I hear someone say D&D. Not 2E or 3E (although I have able to find aspects about both 2E & 3E that I enjoy) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Yorlum Date : 06-01-04 02:08 PM I have had similar troubles. The best analogy I can think of is that 1st ed is my native language. I may learn to 'speak' 3rd ed. With time, I may even become 'fluent'... But I will always 'think' in 1st ed, and using the new stuff is always forcing the issue. To me, it just doesn't feel like D&D. [YMMV, of course] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Elendur Date : 06-01-04 03:31 PM Gaming conventions can be a good source of material too. I got about 10 circa 1980 1e modules for 2 bucks a piece at a convention last year. Maybe you could check out GenCon SoCal this year. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : RobertFisher Date : 06-01-04 04:32 PM Thread Title : Re: A wayward DM returns to the fold. I hope SoCal GenCon will have more smaller vendors this year instead of the just a few big ones. Anyway I think I'll get started with what I have and pick up a few things along the way, as and if I find them. Thanks for the hints and suggestions. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 15] Author : skathros Date : 06-08-04 05:27 PM Welcome back Rian. IMHO, with only the RC and the Dawn of the Emperors Box Set alone, you have more than enough for prolonged play. The RC has all the rules you will ever need in one book and the DotE box is a pretty self contained setting. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 16] Author : Kheldren Date : 06-09-04 05:48 AM I'd also stop by the Mystara thread (In the Campaign Worlds area). Although there is a lot of discussion in connection with 3E, there is as much or more (usually) on OD&D too. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 17] Author : Carkni Date : 06-09-04 01:03 PM Heh. I'm currently playing a Basic game, and I must say, the Glantrians are ******* me off. NO CLERICS?! Gah! Needless to say, we're dying left, right and center in that stupid haunted mansion adventure. Currently, I am the only player left standing, and I dislike doing 1-on-1s with DMs. *shrug* But it's funny how Conan, Parn, Deedlit and Slayn live in this universe. :P -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:20 AM.
