I don't think this thread implies that you cannot like any of the other settings. I love this competition that we have created between the boards, but I like many of the other OOP settings as well as a few that are actually in print (such as Eberron). Still, I always cheer for the underdog, and once Mystara has beaten Dragonlance, I will post more on the other OOP boards... :D Håvard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Thorf Date : 01-27-06 01:13 AM I don't think this thread implies that you cannot like any of the other settings. I love this competition that we have created between the boards... Yes, I agree. These threads aren't really supposed to be negative about other campaign worlds, just positive about Mystara. I love the way these threads give us a place to have general conversation, without taking other threads off-topic. Too much of that can be a bad thing, but just a little allows us to form a much closer community, I think. Most of all, it's so nice to have something to work for - to have the motivation to post more, and to contribute more. I did a similar thing with myself in the first lot of postings of my maps, by making the commitment to post one every day. With Mystara as open, and in some ways static, as it is, motivation is something we all really need, I think. Some people like me, like the change, others hate the change. The 3.0/3.5 treatment Dragon/Dungeon gave it pushed it 300 yrs in the future and made it like the origenal box set. Oh well :D Håvard Having bought WotI on ebay, I have to say - old stuff! :) Although much of it was interesting, I couldn't help thinking "What are they doing to my Mystara with all these changes?" As you said - Way to go, TSR. How to split your fan base in one easy lesson. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 21] Author : Cthulhudrew Date : 02-09-06 12:04 PM I wasnt aware of that happening with DS. From what I recall (unless P33KAJ3W was referring to some other metaplot), the Dark Sun MP came in the course of their novels, which were supposed to complement/showcase the new line, but which ended up with most of the Sorcerer-Kings dying, some Templar becoming a living raincloud, the Dragon dead, and some weird history where the halflings obliterated the planet, leaving it in its current state. Odd stuff. Frankly, I liked the concept of Dark Sun initially, but the novels just put me off completely. They were not very well written, the characters were only memorable for how obnoxious they were (the one good character was killed off in the course of "his" novel), and again, some weird stuff. The part where the giants were cutting off their own heads and replacing them with animal heads stands out in my mind as one of the stranger bits. So, yeah, they set up the setting- which, IIRC, was developed at the same time as their novel line, so they already knew the direction they were going in- and then changed the setting over the course of the release of the novel line. A very strange way of going about things. I did rather like the Simon Hawke books about the Multiple Personality Psionic character, though (which are the only Simon Hawke books I like; I started reading a Shakespeare mystery by him which was just horrendous). I think the concept of a desert world was a bit too stale, from a geographic perspective, to sustain an ongoing campaign. Then again, the "known world" of Athas was a relatively small part of the planet, so expanding it to include some large bodies of water and different ecological settings wouldn't be too hard, and needn't necessarily detract from the bleakness of the setting (if done correctly). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 22] Author : Mortepierre Date : 02-10-06 07:11 AM In any case, we need to deal with the Hawkers first.... :D Not a chance :fight!: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 23] Author : Gazza555 Date : 02-10-06 07:40 AM Not a chance :fight!: Oh yes we will, thanks for the help. ;) Update time. What Culture20 said ;) For example on the 2nd of November we were 3588 posts behind the Greyhawk board, by the 2nd of December we were 'only' 3130 posts behind. Meaning, obviously, that we closed the gap by 458 posts. Negative numbers in the months columns mean that we are actually ahead of that board. They're left in for nostalgia purposes - the first thread of this type asked the question 'Think we'll ever catch up with Ravenloft?' - which we did and are now 6219 posts ahead of. :D Regards Gary -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 129] Author : havard Date : 12-04-06 09:21 AM Thread Title : Re: Think we'll ever catch up with Greyhawk? Maintainance for production servers is usually set into a specific window once a week minimum, and even then it's not done _every_ window. What I meant was, why didn't WotC ever come out with something of their own along the lines of the FRCS or Eberron, as well as supplementary material for 3E. IIRC, the Dragon version was done by the Paizo guys, and the Athas one by the Athas guys (with there being some disagreement amongst the Athas guys about the Paizo presentation). I can't imagine that a hardcover DS book by WotC would have been a poor seller- even if they just ended up repackaging and expanding upon one of the other versions (bringing in the Athas guys as freelancers, or paying the Paizo guys for using/expanding upon the work they'd already done.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 225] Author : Agathokles Date : 02-15-08 09:59 AM Thread Title : Re: Think we'll ever catch up with Greyhawk? I can't imagine that a hardcover DS book by WotC would have been a poor seller- I don't know. DS is very genre-specific, and not an especially popular genre, as far as I can tell. Sure, it's big on the message board, due to a strong and strongly centralized community -- I'm not aware of other large DS forums, while e.g. Ravenloft aways had large messageboards on the fan sites. Also, there are some elements of 3e that are not conductive to a faithful (or useful from a commercial point of view) representation of DS -- e.g., 3e being very dependent on equipment for character balancing, which conflicts with DS assumptions about lack of resources; DS presenting a very different setting than the usual, thus making most splatbooks useless (most Prestige Classes and the like would be useless in a DS campaign), and in general not conforming to the "everything goes" assumption of 3e. All in all, DS was probably less attractive than, e.g., Ravenloft. It might be more attractive for 4e (base premises are similar: PCs start stronger than NPCs, humans are no more common than some other PC races, lots of isolated communities and lots of dangers, limited reliance on equipment, possibility to play without certain classes, etc.), if WotC "no setting" policy became less strict in the future. True, it's closer to Dune than any other D&D setting, both in environment (desert, isolated planet divided into factions-states with ancient and decandent cultures as well as hardy but poor natives) and in theme (ecology). That may make it more or less interesting depending on personal tastes. OTOH, it makes for a setting that is clearly different from the standard ones, thus appealing to a different crowd -- which was Andrew's original consideration. I thought it sounded great when they originally advertised it back in the day, to the point I bought the first boxed set (and the Dragon-Kings hardcover and the- awful, awful Prism Pentad, which I only finished out of a stubborn sense of wanting the back story to the world; thankfully, that stubbornness I managed to drum out of myself about 7 books into the Wheel of Time. :p) It was and is a pretty cool concept, it just quickly became too much of the same. Virtually an entire desert planet got really boring, really quick. The sorcerer-kings ruling over isolated cities got really boring, really quick. Basically, to me, while it had a lot of interesting concepts, they didn't have much life beyond the shock value. And then they have this series that lays out the back story and during the course of which they end up getting rid of that status quo in a strange way that really screws part of the concept (the sorcerer-king part). I have the same problem with sci-fi books that handwave the nature/populace of worlds by confining them to one single geographic feature (the water world, the forest world, the desert world). It just comes across as lazy and boring to me- but then, one of my favorite things is the interplay and differences between different cultures, so worlds that lack that aspect are obviously going to be of less interest to me. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 229] Author : Wilhelm_ Date : 02-24-08 09:27 PM Thread Title : Re: Think we'll ever catch up with Greyhawk? 22,301 for them, 22,031 for us, difference of 270, we're almost there! :) ...I mean, now it's 269 :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 230] Author : Hugin Date : 03-04-08 04:07 PM Thread Title : Re: Think we'll ever catch up with Greyhawk? Why does it matter if we catch up to Greyhawk on these forums? Just curious....... Fair question! :) It doesn't really have anything to do with Greyhawk. I started the original "Catch up with Ravenloft" thread a few years ago. The main idea then was to stimulate the activity here. It is wonderful what a little competition can do. I also think it helps add to the sense of community on these boards. We have definately come a long way since the Ravenloft thread. Greyhawk seeed like a near impossible benchmark back then... BTW: Many people here are fans of Greyhawk, so IMHO it should in no way be seen as an attack on that setting or its fans. In fact, we should now be focusing on Dragonlance... :) Once again..Huzzah!
