Do Kobolds exist on Krynn?

I was working on writing up an Adventure ("The Tower of Blood" based off of an earlier thread on these boards). So I set about creating a Pirate captain and I was trying to decide what kind of character this Dread Captain would be. Since most of the other mariners on the pirate's motley crew would be human, I was trying to come up with a creature race for him.

I started up generating a minotaur when I realized that due to CR constrainsts he wouldn't be able to gain levels of the Dread Pirate PrC without exceeding the CR I'd chosen for him (CR 9). I dunno why 9, I thought that was the right CR, I still don't know what level the party should be so I'm just winging it right now. So I decide no Minotaur. Then what?

Well, this is taking place in the Blood Sea and reptiles like water so maybe a Lizardfolk. But why would Human Pirates follow a Lizardfolk Captain? And what would a Lizardfolk be doing so far from the swamp? The more I thought the more I didn't like Lizardfolk. But I liked Reptile. So then it hits me.

KOBOLD! Kobolds are one of my favorite critters because of a really cool picture I found online once depicting a Kobold Samurai. So I've got a Dread Pirate Kobold on the Blood Sea. But why would humans follow a Kobold. This is harder to justify than them following a Lizardfolk! Kobolds are smelly, ugly, little yammering "things"! So then another one hits me. Hat of Disguised Kobold posing as a Minotaur! Brilliant you say? No? Well poo.

And THEN it hits me! And I yelled at the kids to stop playing baseball in the house. And then I realize that I've never heard of a Krynnish Kobold. Do they exist? No? If not what do you suggest the Captain's race to be?

To be honest I can't remember anyone ever mention wether the kobold exists on Krynn or not. Though I get the distinct impression that we probably would have read about them if they did.

As for the pirate captain's race how about a dark elf Dargonesti? or even 1/2 dargonesti. This way it gives a you a way to perhaps save your Pirate Captain (by him diving overboard and changing into a shark and swimming away) if you want to use him as a recurring villain as well as a way to terrify your players when they are floundering in a sea.

I don't know maybe give him a unique feature like a ruined eye or the like and carry the disfigurement on to the shark. Anyway just a few ideas...

There's a kobold in the Dhamon Saga. Can't recall any others.

I'd say that they are either very rare, highly secretive, or both.

For one, yes, kobolds do exist. They were in a short story involving bugbears and and ettin, if you want a novel source, and they do exist in gaming, too.

For two, why won't a minotaur work? They don't have an ECL, so I'd assume that their CR would be the same as any other "normal" race(human, elf, dwarf, kender, etc.).

Hm, Sea Elf, that DOES sound cool, especially the escape trick. The "Tower of Blood" (I made the title up) has many potential BBEGs for the future. Pirate Captain, Sahuagin Tribe Leader, Evil Head Cultist of Istar, Dragon of the Vanished Mind, and the Shade of the Master of the Tower of High Sorcery of Istar! But just as readily any of those characters could be potential allies.

Bah, I'm no good at this adventure writing thing. I can plan an hour or two before the game, but when it comes to the whole writing out and formatting a new adventure for the future I lose concentration very quickly.

Or what about a ship full of renegade Dragonspawn who are looking to escape from under the thumb of their Dragon overlord and found out about the Lost Tower while searching for magical lore for the Overlord.

What better place for the Dragonspawn to hide then a place that makes all who see it forget where it was (Sorry I take it you were writing about the Istari Wizard's Tower from the other day )

Minotaurs don't have ECL?

Well anyways, they won't work cause I still don't have the DLCS. So I must use the MM and DMG Minotaur for the moment. Tis a shame really.

And Arandur gets a cookie for guessing my vague reference to the Tower of Istar!

Mm, baked Cthulu Fresh!

Jean Rabe loves kobolds. They appear in all of her novels, along with other cool underused monsters, like nagas.

Angel, I guess writing the scenario depends on wether the players you have are proactive or reactive really. Personally I prefer to GM to a proactive party so the notes I usually take are really just locations I have thought up or plot hooks NPC characteristics to help flesh them out.

Ettin are interesting, particularly because they are described as speaking a pidgin of Orc , Goblin, and Giant.

And shadow wights and ogre magi and abominations and spawn and huldrefolk and gnolls and......

Yeah...you can always count on some Dragonlance creature that we rarely hear about in her books. I love it!

Kobolds are a cannon creature in DragonLance and always have been. Elements of the 61st through 64th Kobold Brigades formed part of the 5th and 6th Blue Dragon Army and were involved on the attack on the Tower of the High Clerist in DL8, Dragons of War.

They appear in the Combined Monster Satistics Chart in DL8 as well. Read the module - it's there in black and white.

Appearance in a original series module is *to me* as cannon as it gets. "I read it in a novel" matters little to me - but "I saw it in DL1-14" is the gospel to my way of thinking.

It says right here - "include your Kobold guilt free".
