I am planning on starting a campaign which encompasses the classic modules during the War of the Lance. The players will make their own characters to replace the Companions. I wish to start the campaign at 1st level and advance them to the classic modules as the campaign grows.

I need some suggestions on adventures for the lower levels. What kind of adventures should they have? I know that they should not have contact with draconians since the companions do not encounter any till their flight from Solace.

The current field of characters:

1. 1st level human wizard: aspiring to the white robes ( I am thinking of trying to tempt him to the red or even black robes as the campaign progresses). One of the adventures should be his Test to join the Order (around third level?).

2. A Qualinesti elf ranger 1st level (possibly outcast from the elven lands for some perceived wrong)

3. 1st level kender rogue (handler): probably a close friend of the mage or the ranger/or both.

4. 1st level bard (eventually to become a cleric of Mishakal) this character will be replacing Goldmoon. Bard class was chosen because the character is a seeker after knowledge, stories, and things pertaining to the time before the gods "left"

5. 1st level fighter or noble (aspiring to be a Knight of Solamnia) The character is a young woman whose father and brothers are knights. She wished to join the order but her father and brothers and most other Knights rejected her. She left home to "prove herself".

Does your campaign begin in Solace? Some possible adventure ideas might include the Seekers, something in Crystalmir Lake or in the vallenwoods themselves, and of course there are always the goblins and hobgoblins that were present in Solace.

Maybe some like in soulforge where the group head's to Haven and get's in some hot water... You can then show your mage the truth about human nature...

Thank you both for responding with some good ideas. I have not read Soulforge yet (I know I know I'm way behind). Can you give some details as to the events you are talking about?

I think that you may need more characters that n you have listed. If you are going to play the War of the Lance, characters will die. Maybe adding a couple of more humans might help. They might not all have to be on the good side of the WOL, Look at Kitiara, but there was a mix ocf characters taht was invaluable.

I do have more characters than that. Those are the primary characters. I plan on using some of the "companions" and their associates as NPC's and as PC's henchmen. I am working with my players to determine the relationships to each other and to other characters in the story.

Having read the Chronicles series many times it is the relationships that make the story complete. For example it wouldnt have the same impact if Kitiara was not well known to the companions (very well known to one in particular ;0). So PC's will definitely have to have some kind of history with her.

As to possible death's of characters I know that is inevitable so one of two things will have to happen. One the player will have to take over an NPC or create a new character. Or two the players will have to take time to find someone or some ritual that will resurrect the fallen. Maybe a good dragon somewhere has that power? or perhaps Fizban? I intend to make spells/rituals for such things extremely rare. Once healers of Mishakal are once again roaming the land, use of such spells will require a meeting of the cult leaders to pray and then decide whether such character has fullfilled his/her destiny. If so then no ressurection will even be attempted. If the leaders of the Holy Order determine that destiny has not been met then it will be allowed but not guaranteed.
