How do I do this justice?

To give everyone a bit of background here, I've been a DM of the Forgotten Realms for a good 10 years now (wow, time flies). While I was going through my FLGS today, I came across a copy of the DLCS and couldn't help myself. In 2nd ed. I had a DM that played me through a bit of Dragonlance, and I got a bit of a feel for the world at that time, but from what I understand (I only flipped through the book at this point) things have changed greatly since that point. I haven't read any of the Dragonlance novels, so I'm really out to lunch and don't even know where to begin. A couple of my players are interested in having me run a DL game for them, and I'm interested in doing it, but I want to do the campaign setting justice, and not just a cheesy rip-off based on what I can gather at a glance from the books. I'm sure there's a bunch of die-hards out there that can give me a hand with this. Can someone give me a good starting place or area of the world that I can base a campaign off of? I tend to run fairly story intense games, so I want to make sure I get the atmosphere of the world and the residents down. My main concern is to make sure my players realize they are in a different world from what they are accustomed to. Any suggestions on what area to run my game or any novels to read would be very welcome.

Well, I would probably say you should read the core books, which are the Chronicles, the Legends, Dragons of Summer Flame, maybe the Dragons of a New Age trilogy, but a lot of people don't like them, and definately the War of Souls.

Or, you could just start running the game, and maybe look at a couple of the books as you play. Alternatively, you could just run a campaign set in the time you know, post War of the Lance (which would only be Chronicles and maybe Legends). If you gave everyone a lot of down time, in a short space of time, the Chaos War will have happened, and by then, the Bestiary will be out with lots of fun Chaos creatures in it.

Or, just run a game and hope that it's a good enough game for you and your players, which is what counts most.
