Hi guys/gals,

I'm new here and want your input and criticism (good or bad) on these stats for a 3e magma golem.

First, props to NytCrawlr for his awesome conversions!

I took the already converted information done by NytCrawlr (from www.crimsonsun.org) and changed a few things to try to get it more to 3.5 rules. I also made changes to try and bring it to being slightly less powerful than a stone golem. I haven't yet added creation information.

I am considering giving a DC 20(?) spot check to be able to notice the golem while in lava.

Do you think the current CR (9) is correct?

Let me know what you think.

Magma golems are powerful magical automatons created from the raw material of magma. When completed, a magma golem is a roughly man-shaped creature of red-glowing magma 8' tall and weighing a ton.

Combat
Magma golems use their molten fists to slam enemies.

Heat (Ex): Magma golems radiate intense heat, inflicting 1d6 points of heat damage per round to any creature within 10 feet. This heat also causes an additional 1d10 points of heat damage to any opponent the golem strikes in melee. Likewise, any creature striking the golem with natural weapons (such as fist, etc.) also suffer 1d10 points of heat damage. Anything struck by the golem must make a reflex save at DC 18 or be set on fire, suffering 2d4 points of fire damage per round until they can extinguish the flames.

Crush (Ex): Once every 5 rounds the magma golem can use its special crush attack. Taking a full round action the golem collects itself into a fiery mass of lava and hurls itself at an opponent doing 7d6 points of fire damage, and 3d6 points of crushing damage, a successful Reflex save at DC 15 reduces the damage to half. Anything immune to fire or is size L or larger only suffers 3d6 points of crushing damage, making a Reflex save at DC 10 reduces the damage in half. The magma golem is considered prone after using this attack.

Immunity to Magic (Ex): Magma golems are immune to all spells or spell-like abilities that allow spell resistance, except as follows: dispel magic cast on a magma golem forces a Fort save; if the golem fails, it is stunned for a number of rounds equal to the level of the caster. Magma golems take half damage from all electrical attacks, but they are immune to all types of fire and cold based attacks. In addition, psionic powers from the Telepathy, Clairsentience, Psychometabolism, or Metacreativity disciplines have no effect.

Damage Weapon (Ex): Any nonmagical weapon that hits successfully must make a fortitude save at DC 18 or be destroyed. Any magical weapon that scores a successful hit must make a fortitude save at DC 10 or be destroyed.

Hello there elfeco69 - welcome aboard

The CR of 9 should be OK for a magma golem, but the AC and slam damage seems a little high for a Large creature. I get +16 for the attack (don't forget the -1 for being Large.) Also, 3.5 creatures now have an italicised text block at the start of the monster entry (Surging forth from the lava with a searing wave of heat is a humanoid form that blah blah blah - that kind of thing). And for bonus cookies you should alphabetise the various special abilities and qualities. Lol - sorry, I am a picky swine ;) It's 4am and I just got back from a killer DS game so smack me if I offend. It's a cool conversion

Welcome to the fun, festivities, insanities, and reckless abandon.

Err . . . nice numbers. Won't have a chance to give it a test run for some time, but I'll let you know if I do.

Or you might just want to wait till ToA 3.5 comes out which is getting pretty close to a release date.

The 3.5 magma golem will be in there.
