Thread Title : Turning Undead vs Protection from Evil

Yesterday we had an issue when our cleric announced he would attempt to turn a group of spectres. Since he had recently achieved level 12 he was supposed to automatically destroy 2D6 dices of undead.

His group was within his protection from evil radius and I guessed a turning attempt was an attack. My question: Is there some place (OD&D) where a range is specified ? How many spectres, if any, would be able to respond to his attack (if i'm right and it's considered as one) ?

Thanks in advance.

Tomas
