We just had our first gaming session in *YEARS*. We have been close friends for a long time, but most of our entertainment has revolved around german-style board games. Everyone decided it would be fun to return to our RPG roots for awhile. The first session was just character generation - and it was probably more fun than most adventures I remember. I think most of that was because everyone was really interested in the setting (none of them were former Mystara fans so everything is new to them) and wanted to make the characters fit.

I explained the whole Sielo's Fort setting and everyone (including me!) wanted the characters to be a part of the Sielo family so this is what we came up with:

Name: Alyosha
Family Connection: Grandaughter of the Provisioner (Traladaran)
Class: Cleric (Petra)
Age: 24

Notes: Spent Sheared years in Specularum training as a cleric of Petra. Convinced superiors to assign her to her hometown of Sielo's Fort. Tends to act as a "mother figure" to the others. Sees herself as a behind the scenes power and developed skills and feats to compliment that - plays up the fact that she is small and weak and not a threat.

Name: Aleksandr
Family Connection: Older Son of Trader (Mixed Traladaran/Thyatian)
Class: Fighter
Age: 18
Alignment: Neutral-Good
Size: 5'8" 147 lbs

Name: Grigori
Family Connection: Kolya's (barkeeper) Son (Traladaran)

Name: Tullus

Notes: (This character has gone through the most permutations - from a morose loner to a happy-go-lucky rogue, to the current "don't know my place in the world but want to learn everything I can to find out" chap) A bit on the chubby side, but is a spitting image of his great-uncle twins who were both known sorcerers. Sorcerer abilities first manifested during the black dragon attack two years ago. The shock of seeing his mother killed by dragon acid and the anger of seeing a hobgoblin advancing on him pushed him over the edge. When Grigori wounded the hobgoblin, it was more infuritated and rushed to kill them both. Tullus snapped and cast the Flare spell blinding the hobgoblin which then fled. Trying to find out what direction his life should take and come to terms with the power inside him. Is willing to learn anything, from helping his uncle the blacksmith to his father in the shop to Goblin curses and phrases from the soldiers (but is unwilling to make a committment). Looking forward to being Sheared with his cousin and best friend Grigori (and doesn't mind his older brother or his cute cousin "tagging along" either).

---

So that's our group. We did a very brief roleplaying in which the Shearing Ceremony of Grigori and Tullus took place, their attempts to get permission from the Captain of the Fort to buy passage across the river (to explore "The Hill" and see if they can find the two "water monsters" - superstitious fisherman excuses as to why fishing has been terrible the past year). Also a brief convincing of the two to accept the help of Alyosha and Aleksandr not as family (because they are Sheared), but as companions.

Sounds like a good starting point. What levels are the characters? Since Tullus is multiclassed, I assume they aren't first level and I couldnt see a level noted anywhere.

We went around and around on this for quite awhile. What we finally decided to do was use the apprentice-level characters rule from the DMG (3rd Ed. - p. 40). It essentially allows a multi-class character at 1st level, but with some limitations. When the character becomes 2nd level, the apprentice-level becomes 1st level, thus making a true multi-class character. It made sense with his inability to make any kind of decision for his life's direction.

All the other characters are normal first level.
