ON this forum someone wrote "GREY"hawk, with GREY in big typo to insist on the importance of evil and good balance on this world.
I found it quite exact, but it brought me a question.
Does anybody know why EGG (if it was him) choosed this name for his campaign??
I know the Grey hawks exists in this world but they don't seems linked to the origin of the world, and i don't rmember to ever read something about the origin of this choice.
If you know.....

I believe it has to do with honoring Chief Blackhawk, a famous native american chief that Gary was a fan of. Who Chief Blackhawk was, I am not certain (you could probably hunt it up via google).

Every castle has a name. Castle Greyhawk is where EGG's D&D world began.

The way I heard it, Gary Gygax started the campaign in a dungeon under Castle Greyhawk, which was named for a native American personage of note from his local history.

Black Hawk was a Chief of the Sauk Nation that lived in North Western Illinois, Eastern Iowa and Central Missouri. Abraham Lincoln fought against the Sauk in the Black Hawk War when he was in the Illinois Militia in the 1830's. Jim Thorpe, the greatest athlete of the early 20th century was his Great great grandson.

Yah, and Gary's inspiration for Greyhawk City was Chicago (Go Bears! :D ). He was trying to be a bit aloof with his players tho, and felt that using the name Blackhawk would give some clues to his plotting, so he made a minor tweak to the name, leaving it just close enough for his intended homage.

For more detailed information on this topic from Gary himself, I'd pick up a copy of Dragon magazine Annual #2, where he relates some of the early days of the setting as it grew out around the famous dungeons.
