Ashigaru Spearmen / Light Infantry (5e Battle Master re-skin)

by Marc Saindon

Like the Sumo Wrestler (a 5e Champion re-skin) previously mentioned, this is a suggestion to provide the Fighter with alternatives to just being Samurais. This is a replacement for Oriental Adventure's Bushi (who should have been called a Ronin).

Ashigaru in real history have undergone different phases, even handling firearms, but for Mystara's campaign setting, they are the professional army (non-noble) that Daimyos recruit, which can be expanded by conscription (M&F) during times of crisis. In peace time, the standing army would be policing markets and handle your average guard duty. Wars between Daimyos and Samurais are rare (duels and combat through champions are prefered to limit the spilling of blood and the costs on the economy), although foreign invasions are a reality. Some demobilized Ashigaru form mercenary companies, and others might even turn to banditry when lacking employment.

The Ashigaru typically handles the (low-cost) spear and knows how to work group tactics (spike walls). They would also be interested in the Ochalean crossbow, which takes a shorter time to train with than the longbow (and wields devasting results when fielded en masse) - this is a bit of parallel with their historical counterpart gradually gaining firearms (which is too expensive in Mystara as smokepowder is imported from the Savage Coast).
