Images of Hobgoblins

by Ali Monfis

HobGoblins are a captivating race, far from being mere cannon fodder at higher levels. We should make more efforts to play them in meetings and in cities.

Their sociology stands as a unique feature in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. They evidently stem from a crossbreed between Goblins and humans. Yet, they seem to be the product of an artificial crossing, likely orchestrated by dark mages. Studying their behavior and psychology reveals that they were engineered to serve as bodyguards and soldiers for wizards. Indeed, their society is martial, rooted in the principles of warfare and military discipline. They exhibit extreme obedience and submission to hierarchy, organizing themselves like military units, only thriving in environments of fortresses, towers, and war. Their greatest honor is to die on the battlefield, to protect and serve.

Moreover, they harbor both a fascination and a sacred fear of magic and magicians. They are utterly incapable of combating wizards, except under the command of another magician. This behavior and psychology clearly indicate their artificial creation for the purpose of serving as bodyguards to magicians. They despise their Goblin cousins, resenting any association with those disorganized, chaotic creatures. When forced to work alongside Goblins, they maltreat and enslave them, not hesitating to kill. They also harbor a disdain for humans, stemming from an inferiority complex, fear orcs for their superior strength, and are simultaneously fascinated and contemptuous of their physical power and disorganized savagery.
