Fauna and Monsters

by WingofCoot

Hiak-lor abounds in birds of all types, both common and widespread types and exotic ones found nowhere else. Many unique island birds - including flightless species - are preserved here which were extinct on the Outer World, such as during the Great Rain of Fire and the climatic changes afterward. The largest herbivores here are giant flightless birds such as moa and elephant birds; there are also huge carnivorous birds such as the phororhacos (sword beak) and giant eagle.

As a haven for birds, Hiak-lor lacks egg-eating creatures such as rats and snakes. It has no non-flying reptiles (including dinosaurs) and very few mammals, those which exist (besides humans!) being mostly inoffensive smallish herbivores such as rabbits/hares, marmots, and a form of small deer (usually under 100 lb.) which are prey for large raptors, phororhacos, and giant eagles (as well as for the Hiakrai).

Strange prehistoric birds such as the Archaeopteryx can also be found here, as can pterosaurs (small found everywhere, medium near rivers, large in mountains) and small rocs.

Long-range flyers from either the surface of the Hollow World or other Floating Continents can reach Hiak-lor, so almost any flying monster could be encountered here, other than short-distance flyers such as the flying viper or sea dragon.

Creatures which might fly up to Hiak-lor from the surface include: chimera, dragon (various types – more commonly gold, green, red, white), flapsail, gargoyle, griffon, hippogriff, pegasus, pteranodon (giant), roc (large and giant), wyvern.

Various creatures may arrive only when Hiak-lor approaches another Floating Continent. Examples include: Enduks, gargoyles, harpies, pegataurs, sphinxes, sprites.
