Most commonly encountered are Hulderfolk with animal tails, but ears or hoofs are also common. These are fairy creatures living in woodlands, near hills or mountainsides. They are sometimes encountered alongside well fed farm animals. Hulderfolk will often try to charm mortals to bring them with them to their underground realm. Stories of female Hulderfolk are common, but both male and female Hulderfolk exist and both male and female mortals may become their victims. Some who manage to escape captivity return confused or insane years later not being able to properly account for what has happened.
Hulderfolk are also seen as protectors of nature and many Northmen pay respect to the Hulderfolk when travelling into the wilds. If so, the Hulderfolk will tend to leave them alone. Mortals who show respect may also find that their livestock will be especially well fed.
Hulderfolk have a charm person ability and victims must make a Saving Throw -2 to avoid being charmed. They do prefer if mortals join them willingly however. If forced into combat, Hulderfolk may use spears or other weapons.
Invisibility to Mortals: Like all fairies, the Hulderfolk can become Invisible to Mortals. While invisible the Fossegrim is -4 to hit. It can remain invisible in combat.Norse Fairies: One group of fairies made a deal with the Immortal Odin. Staying out of the war with the Immortals, Odin granted them protection on the Outer Planes of Vanaheim and Alfheim. Hulderfolk will often be seen dancing and enjoying themselves on those planes.
