Find Humanoid Familiar

by Robin

Dragons might use this spell from Dragon Magazine (AD&D2 originallyturned into this D&DBECMI variant)

Draconic Conjuration spell level 3
Range : 1 Mile per level/HD of the caster
Duration: Special
Area of Effect: 1 Familiar
Saving Throw: Special

This spell is similar to the normal Find Familiar, except that the familiar summoned by the spell is a Humanoid. Only races of Humanoid class are eligible to become familiars (Goblin, Kobold, Orc, Hobgoblin, Thoul). The Humanoid so attracted is unshakably loyal to the Dragon (morale 12), willingly giving its life for its master.
The Dragon and the Humanoid share the ability to communicate telepathically at a range of up to 5 miles. The Dragon gains no sensory bonuses, and it suffers no damage should the familiar die. The casting takes considerably time. The Dragon must be in a calm, relaxed state, well away from any distractions, and must continuously repeat a monotonous, hypnotic chant until the familiar appears. It is impossible for the Dragon to maintain the chant for more than 20 Hours, so if at the end of this period no familiar has arrived, the spell has become a failure. A Dragon can’t cast this spell more than once a year; it can have no more than 1 familiar at one time. The others attracted will be followers of this leader type. The familiar will thus always be the tribal leader, shaman or Wicca. When it arrives, it is totally loyal to its master. This spell is actually a strong version of Charm, it grants its victim a similar opportunity to throw off its effects. On a regular basis, the familiar can roll a save vs. Spells, this roll suffering a penalty for each 2 HD of the casting Dragon. The frequency of the save depends on the race of the familiar. If successful it means the familiar has thrown of the spell and is totally freewilled again. Its first reaction will probably be to escape. If the Dragon is within 5 miles of the familiar and awake when it shakes of the influence, it will sense the termination of the telepathic bond, and thus know that its familiar is free. The Dragon response depends on this alignment and current mood(probably enhanced on in which Draconic Circle it currently follows). Killing a familiar while it is still bound by the spell is not acceptable behavior, and will bring down upon the Dragon retribution in form of a 25%failure penalty during the Ceremony of Sublimation. Killing the poor thing once it has shaken the spell is just fine, however. Demi-Human-oids, can’t try to develop a similar spell of their own, they gain no benefits from any knowledge they have of the Draconic version. The spell is too closely aligned to the mental structure and innate Magical abilities of Dragons to be translated into a form usable by nondracoforms, and as thus this spell is of no use to nonDragons.
Humanoid Famiars are immune to Familiar enhancing magic.
