AD&D Revised Intelligence Table

by Jim Bobb

Same as Exceptional Strength, Wizards (especially Elves) with high Intelligence scores being able to learn any number of spells without an upper limit seems a little out of control. Using the Wizard's Spell Compendiums suggestion we revised the Intelligence table as follows:

INTELLIGENCE - Revised

Ability Score Number of Languages Max Spell Level Chance to Learn Spell Max. # Spells / Spell Level Illusion Immunity
1-8 1 None None None None
9 2 4th 35% 6 None
10 2 5th 40% 7 None
11 2 5th 45% 7 None
12 3 6th 50% 7 None
13 3 6th 55% 9 None
14 4 7th 60% 9 None
15 4 7th 65% 11 None
16 5 8th 70% 11 None
17 6 8th 75% 14 None
18 7 9th 85% 18 None
19 8 9th 95% 24 1st Level
20 9 10th 96% 30 1st & 2nd Level
21 10 10th 97% 30* 1st - 3rd Level
22 11 10th 98% 30 1st - 4th Level
23 12 10th 99% 30 1st - 5th Level
24 15 10th 99** 30 1st - 6th Level
25 20 10th 99% 30 1st - 7th Level

*The maximum number of spells a non-divine being can learn is 30 spells per spell level. Divine beings of 21+ intelligence have no limit to the number of spells they may know.

**The maximum chance to learn spells a non-divine being can have is 99%. Divine beings of intelligence 24+ have a 100% chance of learning a spell previously unknown.

So let that new player bring in his 34th level/23 Intelligence Archmage with every known spell in his spellbooks collection. Then inform him he has to choose which spells he KNOWS and ROLL to make sure he understands them!
