Time from Student to Magic-User

by Aoz

I always thought it took a child at least 4 years of schooling to become a magic-user.

I was looking at Gaz Dawn of Emperors on Page 109 (I know it is not Glantri but still related in magic schooling):

Education (Thyatis to Alphatia)

Magic-User Teaching: 100 GP per month which will enable the child to reach 1st level as a magic user; the student must adventure in the world to achieve higher experience levels. Cost of boarding, if the child is not living with parents, is 50 gp/month to 500 gp/month; it takes a year for a child to reach 1st level.

I know Glantri is different, and wizards can even gain XP by collecting rare books.

I'm more interested in the amount of time it takes to become a magic-user.

In Glantri: The Kingdom of Magic

Tuition costs 5 gp per level daily in the Glantri

So, 28 days x 5 = 140 GP (Glantri) about on par with 100 (training)+ 50 (boarding) = 150 GP/month (Thyatis to Alphatia)

That means let's use (Thyatis to Alphatia) in 12 months x 150 GP per month = (1 year) and 1800 GP the student becomes a 1st level magic-user!!

After investigating: Gaz 3 The Principalities of Glantri on Page 56

DM Notes: Spell-casting children must be sent to the Great School of Magic for training (seven days a week, eight months a year minimum). Failing to provide this training causes the child temporarily to lose his spellcasting ability, it is regained when the child resumes school studies or reaches the age of sixteen. An NPC child gains one level of experience per 12 months of study, up to half the parent's highest experience level.

So, I guess it is possible to become 1st level magic-user after one year of study.
