New Kolland Cultural Curiosities

by Aoz

FOOD
The Piazza Food Network is pleased to introduce our special guest food critic. You might remember his achievement for drinking the most Thunder Grog in last year Grog Fest in Glantri: Aozy Markov. His first assignment for the PFN was to travel to all the principality of New Kolland and report to us on the unique culinary treasures of the broken lands.

By Aozy Markov

I had to touch of some of the Rations in New Kolland

Evereskan Honey Comb, Elven Travel Bread (Amaretto Liquer Cake with custom swirls), Lurien Spring Cheese (goat cheese with garlic, salt, spices and shallots), Delimbyr Vale Smoked Silverfin (Salmon), Honey Spiced Lichen (Kale Chips), and Silverwood Pine Nuts.

Came wrapped in cheesecloth and tied in burlap package. Forest strider drumsticks, molasses sweet wheat bread “black strap”, aged Munster, hard boiled eggs, mixed wild nuts

Fried Delimbyr smelt, spiced goat cheese (paprika crusted hand pressed Fontina), shortbread (savory pistachio), glass travel jar filled with Secomber Red (wine), hard boiled quail eggs packed in rolled oats (to keep safe), dried figs from Calimshan, and Southwood smoked goat sausage (blood sausage).

Fresh caught boiled Delimbyr Crayfish on wild chives, coastal carrageen moss entrapping estuary brine shrimp (irish moss, dried brine shrimp), Brackish-Berries (blackberries), Blackened Dart-Frog legs (frog legs) on spring sprouts (clover sprouts), roasted bog bugs on a stick!

Underground black truffle rothe cheese (Black Knight Tilsit), Donigarten Moss Snails (Escargot in shallot butter sauce), Blind cave fish caviar in mushroom caps (Lumpfish caviar), duck egg imported from the surface Realms, Black velvet ear fungus (Auricularia Black Fungus Mushroom).

Rat stew in a bread bowl: This rat stew recipe is certainly not the most traditional, but it does pays homage with a small potatoe. The Goblin's add a dark seasoning and it keeps the meat tender and moist. The fresh herbs, onion and garlic ensure a broth that is rich in flavor, and a few carrots add some variety and heartiness. The results are a rich and tender stew whose taste is only further enhanced by the crusty bread bowls that it is served in.

New Food Called: Muul'dac Lhaagec (Goblin : Kolland Jerky [made from Troll meat]): Tastes like beef with Teriyaki and even helps with fatigue. May have unknown side effects with prolonged consummation.

Scorpid meat and soup. The scorpion is washed, poisoned removed, and then stewed for hours with pork, garlic, ginger and some mushroom or a combination of other meats such as snakes, fish, or tortoise. Many diners describe the scorpion soup as having a taste similar to regular chicken. If you wonder what do stewed scorpion taste like, just think about the crispy French fries.

and

Kolland Cactus fruit: the fruit has a subtle sweet taste, which isn’t as strong as that of prickly pear fruits. Most cacti succulents contain some acidic compounds that are difficult for the human, goblin and kobold livers to process. However, Orcs and Lizardman have no issues with the fruit and consider it a blessing when found traveling through the Broken Lands.

Bamboo Worm and also some grubs: It’s a really healthy snack- a bamboo worm meat contains 30% of protein. How does a bamboo worm taste like? It’s hard to describe it but I’d say like a bit like a crispy grilled cheese.

Silkworm: It tastes similar to the puffed rice and can be easily eaten as a snack.

In fact, it’s one of the best New Kolland bugs (at least in my opinion). If you want to try eating insects in New Kolland, silkworms are one of the best bugs to start with.

Giant Water Bug: Is a large edible bug of NewKolland. It’s also one of the tastiest!

Imagine a combination of french fries and cucumber. That’s how the giant water bud taste like.

You can eat it all but I advise to remove the outer wings.

Cricket: Edible crickets are one of the most popular snacks in New Kolland.

They are crispy from the outside and soft inside. You can eat them all, however, it’s better if you close your eyes. Fried crickets in Thailand are big, so it’s quite difficult to actually eat them.
When it comes to taste, you can feel that you are eating meat (shrimp or chicken). Edible crickets have a nutty flavor and they are usually salty.

Grasshopper: I was surprised that they are really tasty. Actually, these Kolland street food bugs taste like cheese-flavored chips. They are crispy and salty as well.

If you want to try exotic food in New Kolland, you can choose grasshoppers. You won’t be disappointed.

Beetle: Edible beetles in New Kolland are quite popular, however, they are not tasty. At least in my opinion. Imagine eating a fish that smells like dog food. That’s how fried beetles taste like. Kobolds and Goblins seem to love them but as a human a would suggest passing on the beetle.

They are quite similar to crickets. You can eat the entire beetle without removing its legs or wings.

Kolland Crawfish: In general, their taste is near the taste of crab and shrimp. The taste is sweet but mixed with a little bit of salt and mineral. When you eat the different parts of the crawfish, you’ll get a different taste from them.

Their meaty taste with the appropriate texture reveals when it goes through boiling or steaming perfectly. If you want to taste the subtle and authentic taste of the crawfish, take it as a main dish. Besides, you can enjoy a new taste from the crawfish by eating it with soup, pasta, and other items.

Roasted Spider: The taste can be described as bland, "rather like a cross between chicken and cod", with a contrast in texture from a crispy exterior to a soft center. The legs contain little flesh, while the head and body have "a delicate white meat inside".

Kolland Steamed Clam: Clams are edible but are a bit chewy and don’t taste very good. I prefer to add some white wine sauce or garlic butter sauce to the Kolland Steamed Clam.

Mushroom Soup: If you like mushroom you will enjoy any of the many Kolland Mushroom Soups.

and finally,

Kolland fungus soup: What does it taste like? Oatmeal that has a grass like flavor added to it. It is much easier with a tall Mug of Thunder Grog to wash it down. I was surprised how filling the fugus soup was.
