Oath of the Furies

by Marc Saindon

This idea is a Paladin 5e Oath of Vengeance re-skin that serves as a militant branch of the Thyatian cult of Tarastia.

Paladin: Oath of Vengeance

The general concept is that in a peplum setting like Thyatis, the character seeks to emulate the three furies of greco-roman myth by hounding and punishing criminals, training with both the whip (a finesse and control weapon) and the torch. A group of Furies can ensnare a target with whips and close in to slowly immolate him. More advanced Furies also use scourges, flails and modified maces that double as torches. Executioner's axe is also an option. The build is Dex-based, so armor tends to be light (leather) for mobility, but also esthetically modified to enhance intimidation (black dye), which accidentally re-creates a lot of old school Drow art and may leave less mature players with their heads in the gutter. Higher level Furies will seek out magic items like a flaming whip.

The Furies typically work as bounty hunters, but can also administer prisons or serve as executioners for local authorities. Others can serve as temple guards, or just wing it as Xena-esque adventurers and punishing miscreants along the way of their travels. Lawful Evil Furies can have ties to the Iron Ring, where the organization is legal, but this falls more into NPC territory.
