Scabbard of Oceansend

by Cab Davidson

This quite ordinary looking scabbard, being made of thin wood with metal fixtures and fittings, with a steel loop to allow attachment to a belt or baldric, resizes to fit any normal sword. It is, unlike many dress scabbards, painted in a dull red colour, as if of arterial blood. Its ordinary appearance belies its tremendous magical value.

Firstly, any normal sword stored in this scabbard for more than 1 hour becomes sharpened to a magical degree, behaving as if a +1 weapon for an hour after being drawn (this at any one time only 1 weapon may be thus improved by the scabbard. Additionally, any magical sword of +2 to +4 stored in the scabbard is treated as having an extra +1 bonus for 1 hour after being drawn.

Secondly, the scabbard was blessed by the immortals of Oceansend to protect the King of Oceansend, and once per day the wearer of this scabbard may activate a cureall effect upon themselves. Upon doing, the dull red tinge of the scabbard takes on a bluish hinge, changing colour from that of arterial blood to that of veinous blood, the original colour slowly returning (from the bottom up) over 24 hours.

Thirdly, the scabbard bares a kingly psesence all of its own. If visibly worn by a ruler and regularly seen by inhabitants it has the effect of a Rod of Dominion.

This unique item is considered the royal property of the Kings of Oceansend, and should it be stolen it can be expected that a great reward may be offered for its return.
