An Index to Mystara Products

by David Keyser

This page includes all TSR D&D and AD&D products which use or mention Mystara. It extends to other products, not necessarily produced by TSR, if they provide information on the campaign world of Mystara. A few products have also been included which are compatible with Mystara. So while novels, computer games, home-spun adventures and products adventures and products from other companies are(or can be) included, products like miniatures or the SpellFire! game are not included, as they have no additional information that cannot be found within the materials listed below.
At this time, only the net resources at TSR are provided, but there is a wealth of information provided by Mystara fans on the web.

Definition of Terms

Explicit - The item is directly and explicitly placed in Mystara. "Canon" material.

Implicit - The item does not define where in Mystara it exists, but is linked to Mystara because it is part of the same series, or contains material which is only found in Mystara.

Compatible - The item is not set within Mystara, but is compatible with and easily placed in Mystara. This includes non-Mystara D&D material. Thunder Rift material is not included, due to personal prejudice.

Suggested - The item is not quite compatible, but methods and suggestions are made so that the item can be placed in Mystara.

Mentioned - The item has very brief mention of Mystara, with information useful to Mystaran DMs. For example, Planescape or Ravenloft products may include a character or setting from Mystara.

Unknown - At this time, I do not know if the product is related to Mystara or not.

Vapourware - The material was announced by TSR at some point in time, but in fact the project was never completed nor published.

The ACCESSORY Series

This series began before Mystara was recognised as a campaign world. Some of the products here were retroactively placed in Mystara. AC6 is not included because it only contained player character sheets, and there never was an AC8.

The BASIC Series

After 19 years of TSR assuring its fans that the differences between the recalled original, orange cover version of the B3 module and the released green cover version were confined to an incorrect map and three pieces of artwork, the truth has been exposed. WotC released the original B3 module on its website in PDF format. While the overall plot is similar, the orange version provides a different location for the setting, providing a new map and adds a new political entity.

The BLACKMOOR Series

DW refers to Different Worlds magazine, which printed a two-part adventure set in Blackmoor, written by Dave Arneson. JG refers to Judges Guild, which printed a pre-AD&D description of Blackmoor to be set in the JG world. I have not included the Blackmoor book(TSR #2004A) which was published way back in 1975. It is mostly a rules supplement for the then brand-new D&D game, with only a partial description of the adventure fully described in DA2.

Note, I am not including the Domesday Book #13 issue, which has an article on Blackmoor.
I don't know for sure, but I believe that the information contained in that magazine was most likely included in the DA modules or in the Judges Guild supplement. I have added an appendix at the end for those who don't know what the Domesday Book is.

IMAGINE Magazine

Imagine is a magazine published in the United Kingdom by TSR Hobbies (UK) Ltd. Their D&D material was quite good. For the later issues, 16-30, Imagine printed a series of articles detailing the city of Pelinore, providing statistics for both D&D and AD&D.
Although set in its own campaign world, the city could be moved to Mystara.

Clark Ashton Smith Stories

CAS invented a fantasy province of France called Averoigne, which he used as the background for some of his stories. Averoigne was used by TSR as the background setting for X2. Later, elements of Averoigne were fully adopted into the Mystara setting. Although none of these stories are directly RPG material, they do provide details on Averoigne. If the notes indicate a synopsis or fragment, this means that the book does not have the full story, but contains the notes that CAS used while composing the story.

Weird Tales is a magazine which featured the original prints for many CAS stories.

The short stories have the information pertaining to Averoigne, and many have been printed in more than one book over the last 60 years. This list is as comprehensive as possible, though it may not be complete.

Appendix

Appendix: What is the Domesday Book?

The Domesday Book was the official 'zine of the Castle & Crusade Society, started back in 1968. Membership high was about 60-80 and included such luminaries as E. Gary Gygax, Jeff Perren, Robert J. Kuntz, Len Lakofka, Bill Hoyer and David L. Arneson. The Domesday Book was originally founded by Gary Gygax (one-time Editor - noted at the bottom of the contents page in issue #13).

Issue #13 is noted for the very first pre-Dungeons and Dragons-related article ever to appear: by Dave Arneson, no less, entitled, "Facts about Blackmoor", detailing the 'First Fantasy Campaign'.
