Tanuki as a player race (Swiftstride Shifter re-skin)

by Marc Saindon

Another addition to Horai from the Feywild/Good Kingdom, Tanuki are raccoon-like tricksters who are integrated in Mystara as a commoner Fey. The have the Fey label (can't be a Cleric or Paladin, but can be a Ranger or Druid). Their animalistic form is their default shape: they can shapeshift into a human persona (usually to trick people), which the reverse of a Eberron Shifter (although their stats drop, they can look like anyone they've already seen for a minute).

Tanuki are Chaotic, thus roles like Bards (especially as drummers) and Rogues fit them well. Tanuki gain recognition for pulling pranks, and humans are the usual targets, so they are more likely Fey to venture into Yasuko. Because they bring trouble, they usually aren't accepted much in Yasukan society, occupying the lower castes. Some tamer Tanuki (Chaotic Good) might ply their trades as stage magicians at the market, content to pull off small tricks as Bards to entertain the masses; the rarer, more devious Tanuki (Chaotic Evil) might decimate entire families one by one by posing as one of their members, or trick a husband into eating "mystery meat" by posing as his wife.
