The Fort

by Rafael Lopes Vivian

Continuing on my series of battlemaps inspired on Tower of Doom, I drew four sections of The Fort. This one took a bit more than I wanted, but I already expected it from the experience I had with The Town Under Siege. I feel like this one is kind of unfinished, but as always I had to push it to the finish line and move on. It's 40x52 squares 5ft. each, done in Dungeondraft.

After witnessing and experiencing the violence of the monstrous raiders at the Main Road first hand, the group vows to help the soldiers at The Fort. And the closer they get, the worse it looks. While there're no raiders to be seen on the way there, it is clear a small army of humanoids recently passed through, leaving farms and homesteads in ruins in their wake.

The Fort was invaded by gnolls and kobolds. It was a bloody skirmish. Understaffed, and seeing an eminent breach, The Fort's commander desperately retreated its forces to the deeper levels, leaving several traps behind, and unleashing The Fort's undead prisoners from the dungeons.

After talking the walls, the horde ransacked the fort, trapped the survivors in the lower levels by collapsing all ways out, and released a wild displacer beast on the courtyard. The bulk of the horde quickly moved on, but a number of them stayed to keep terrorizing the region.

Surviving troops in and around the area help the PCs enter and rescue any of the survivors, and will serve as henchmen for free as long as the PCs are in the fray.

The map is divided in four separate sections that can serve as background for a little fighting and exploring: the courtyard, the keep, the underground dungeon and on the top of the wall. The raiders will likely be present in all of them except the dungeons, that are crawling with ghouls and skeletons. The displacer beast could be anywhere the GM wants. Once the group finds and drives it away or kills it, the rest of the marauders will leave, afraid to overstay their welcome.
