The Swamp

by Rafael Lopes Vivian

I've been quickly drawing a few battlemaps inspired by the campaign from the videogames Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara, and so far they're not coming particularly amazing, but this is a weird one. This is The Swamp, where you face the black dragon, in Tower of Doom.

Although this is outdoors, in my adventure The Swamp is sort of maze-like, in a sense that you can't see far and quickly spot the dragon and other enemies around you right away. There are walls of vines, trunks and thorns that block passage and vision, and the whole place is obscured by fog.

As I finished what I intended to do with this map, I thought it came out looking messy for the GM to navigate. That's why I added a black and white blob of the plant walls. The players might attempt to cut through the plants or climb them, fine, but it will definitely be very laborious. Flying over the area doesn't do much, because the fog is thick, so a spy would need to be flying practically at ground level to note dangers, and specially the well hidden dragon, who's crazy to catch the group off-guard. There are ghouls all over the place, but they can't see very well in the fog, which makes them mostly wander around aimlessly, unless provoked. The black dragon is waiting to face the invading party in the center of the area, doing his best to stay out of sight until the time is right.

Done in Dungeondraft, some 5 hours work while playing with the boys, 40x52 squares of 5ft.
