Tora (Greater Rakasta) as a character race

by Marc Saindon

A quick fix here. I don't speak Japanese, so I'm going use the basic word of "Tora" to name the Tiger-based Greater Rakastas (the word means tiger) and to distinguish them from the baseline, more numerous, Cat-based Domestic Rakastas (which I call 'Meganeko' in fake Japanese). If you are a linguist, homebrew a better name. Incidently, mundanes tigers encountered in Davania (a tiger, in Africa?) are called by the westernized word "Taigā".

Tora are usually in the higher castes. Many are Samurais, and most of Daimyos (Lords) are of Tora origin. They cultivate a 'noblesse oblige' attitude. Because they adhere to Sun Tzu's idea that war is a waste of resources, they limit the damage of conflict through duels (Iaijustsu quick-draw being popular), either personal or by champion (they have no qualms about total war against outsiders, though).

The typical cycle of Yasukan politics is that an outside threat, like the Myoshiman Empire, Thyatians or Alphatians threatens the safety of Yasuko. The independent Daimyos (who function a bit like the Soderfjord Jarldoms) convene and appoint a temporary leader - call him a "Shugo-Daimyo" to avoid using the word Shogun (which would be like the Emperor's right arm and lead to confusion), and he unifies Yasuko under his banner. Of course, the "Shogu-Daimyo" usually overstays his welcome ("oh, the emergency is not over YET"), which brings revolts and civil war, leaving Yasuko weakened against a new external threat, requiring again unified force... Other times, a Shogu-Daimyo might even plot with the enemy, calling Yasukans to pay tribute as a means to avoid war, while at the same time setting himself up as a Viceroy or Shogun in service of that empire (this usually ends with ninjas killing him). Daimyos are aware of these schemes and cycles, and most will point out crass political maneuvering of rivals, and attempt to find a better solution to this cycle (which the PCs might provide).
