Yōsei as a playable race (Sidhe re-skin)

by Marc Saindon

With the Good Kingdom providing the space needed to easily fit in a Feywild in Mystara, there is the question of populating it. In Ochalea, I've suggested that the Feywild counterpart of towns are populated from animal-folk inspired by the Chinese zodiac. In Yasuko, the Feywild (called Horai) could follow a different theme, and the fairies (called Yokai) be mainly based around animated objects (re-purpose with Fey label various creatures like Mimics, Animated Statues, Meks, etc.) and the 5 Elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Void "Shadow Stuff"). One group I would fudge the folklore a bit for are the Sidhe, the noble fairies, which would form courts in Horai (pledging allegiances to the 5 Dragon Courts) and they would be called Yosei. Each would be assigned a noble title ("Lord of Teapots", "Queen of Summer") and seek to promote their respective portfolios with their alien mindset (the Teapot lord might boost a tea harvest with magic so people would be drinking more tea, and thus using more teapots, making him more relevant, but gaining the ire of the Sake lord). While their default form would be "Japanese Elf", they would be mostly clueless on actual Elves.

Younger Yosei (your PC), would start with a rather weak title (Lard Lad, Broom Boy, Smile Lady, Keymaster) and it would be up to them to either promote the portfolio OR engage in contests (riddles and such, although more malignant Yosei could duel to death) to challenge another Yosei for his title (so someone else becomes Lard Lad). Naturally, Yosei needing reputation to increase their status are more active in the normal world when they are young, while established Yosei (King of Harvests, Master of Chamberpots) have secured a place for themselves in Yasukan culture and imagination that they don't need to remind mortals of their importance.

Yosei fall in the more Chaotic alignments, as they are fey and have a more alien mindset. They can't be Clerics or Paladins, and probably be attracted to classes like Druid or Bard, although I expect Fighter, Rogues and Magic-Users fill their ranks as well. They'll probably exhibit odd behavior like talking to furniture, as the rules of Horai and Yasuko are a bit different. Yasukans know of them, but they aren't seen on a daily basis by most people.
