Yarrviksverd
by Cab DavidsonAn ancient sword, considered the Kingly sword of Oceansend, Yarrviksverd is a normal sword made of pattern welded steel, made to a shape reminiscent of ancient bronze blades (being rather flared in the middle of its length). This is perhaps an indication of its great age, being made in a style of ages gone by.
In the hands of most this is a potent weapon, being normal sword +3. But in the hands of any dominion ruler it is transformed into one of the most feared weapons of Mystara. Within the capital city or largest settlement of a rulers dominion, this sword behaves as a normal sword +5 of slicing with flaming ability that can be used up to 3 times per day. Outside of that city and to a distance of 5 miles therefrom, it loses its flaming ability and is becomes a +4 normal sword of slicing, and from 5 to 10 miles away it is a +3 sword of slicing. Further from the dominion it reverts to being a +3 weapon in the hands of the dominion ruler.
Yarrviksverd has belonged to Kings of Oceansend for generations, and while not itself the reason for the continued independence of the City State, it does explain some of the warrior reputation of the Kings of Oceansend as they have fought to defend the city over the years.
